March 15, 2026
📍 Appalachian Trail, VA
⛅ Partly cloudy, 14°C

The morning fog lifted around 9 AM, revealing a carpet of trillium along the north-facing slope. A pair of pileated woodpeckers were drumming on a dead hickory about 30 meters off-trail — their distinctive rectangular excavation marks were fresh. The spring peepers were deafening near the creek crossing. Collected a small sample of the lichen growing on the granite outcrop at mile marker 847 for later identification. The forest floor is waking up; fiddlehead ferns are unfurling everywhere.

What's Blooming Now

Seasonal highlights for March 2026

Spring Wildflowers

Bloodroot, hepatica, and trout lily are emerging across eastern forests. Head to the understory before the canopy closes in for the best displays.

Migratory Birds Return

Warblers and thrushes are making their way north. Set up near wetlands at dawn for the best chance to spot early arrivals like the Louisiana Waterthrush.

Mushroom Foraging

Morel season is approaching fast. Scout south-facing slopes near dead elms and tulip poplars. Remember: when in doubt, leave it out.
